Peeta has constantly needed help, and Katniss has always come to his rescue. Sure, he saved her once, by throwing her a piece of burnt bread when she was starving, but even providing food falls into that “nurturing” category. And then there was Gale, Katniss ‘ ever-so-masculine friend and possible love interest.
Haymitch explains that an Avox is someone who committed a crime and had their tongue cut out. Katniss says it must be a mistake, and Peeta covers for her by saying the Avox girl resembles someone from there school. Katniss says for a moment, before the girl was taken, she locked eyes with her, but Katniss did nothing.
Beetee explains that Peeta was put through fear conditioning using tracker jacker venom. All the conditioning and torture done by the Capitol convinces Peeta that Katniss is a threat and that she killed his family. Essentially they’ve turned him into a weapon, set out on destroying the enemy — Katniss .

He dislikes and hates the Capitol for the Hunger Games. He thinks it is going to change him into some kind of monster that he is not. He doesn’t want that to happen. If he does die, he wants to die as himself.
Katniss feels guilt for many things in her life. She has a huge guilt complex which rules her life and everything she does. She has grown an attachment to Peeta (not really love, but something close to it). If she doesn’t do everything in her power to keep Peeta out of the games and safe, she will have more guilt.
She watched the Capitol mutilate her and kill the boy -just like watching the Hunger Games. Kat wonders if Avox will enjoy watching her die because she didn’t help her; Avox’s revenge.
Katniss senses that the adults are on edge after she recognizes the Avox , but Peeta rescues her again with his lie about Delly Cartwright.
What are the pros and cons of Peeta and Katniss being coached together? The pros of Katniss and Peeta training together is that they can be allies. They can also practice fighting with eachother, so that they can be good fighters during the games. The cons is that they both know their eachother’s skills.
All along, Gale has taken on the role of protector of Katniss’ family – this was his reason for not volunteering for the first Games with Katniss. Now it is glaringly obvious that he has failed in his role as Prim’s protector, as Prim has died. Gale , arguably, has killed her or had a role in her killing .
Originally Answered: Does Katniss truly love Peeta ? No. Katniss never actually loves Peeta in a mature and romantic way. Her feelings for him vary based on the situation, but they never develop into fullblown love .
In Catching Fire, Peeta lied about Katniss being pregnant to try to protect her from the Games. Katniss said that she miscarried due to an electric shock in the arena. However, during the 15 years after the events of Mockingjay, Katniss became pregnant legitimately.
Adulthood. Two weeks after he was crowned victor of the second Quarter Quell, his mother, younger brother, and girlfriend were all killed by President Snow because of the stunt that Haymitch pulled with the axe and force field.
Before Katniss can reach her and bring her to safety, the second wave of bombs explodes, killing Prim and other medics and badly burning Katniss . Prim’s last word ever in the book is Katniss . Katniss becomes so unhinged after Prim’s death that she loses her voice for several days.
In the end of the movie when Katniss is about to kill Cato he says “I’m dead anyway. I always was”. Cato says killing is what he does best, but life hasn’t been as great for a career tribute as everyone thinks.
