Uluru and Kata Tjuta are incredible at any time of year. However, the weather in Central Australia varies quite a bit between seasons. The best time to come is between May and September , when the maximum temperature during the day is usually between 20°C and 30°C.

Driving directly from Melbourne to Uluru takes about 25 hours, but it’s highly recommended to break the journey up at many places along the way. Despite the distance , many people do like to drive from Melbourne to Uluru as it’s a great way to explore Australia’s vast landscape.
December, January , February This is Australia’s summertime and is the worst time to travel to the lovely Uluru . The temperatures can be unbearable in the day, reaching low to the mid-30s majority of the time. The highest temperature recorded was a top of 45.5 Celsius degrees, which was only in the shade!
Fly . Yulara has its own airport, called Ayers Rock /Connellan Airport (airport code AYQ). You can fly directly to Yulara from a number of Australian cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Darwin, Adelaide and Alice Springs.
Most people visit Uluru from Alice Springs via an organised tour or a day-long self-drive excursion. The other option is to fly or drive to Yulara and stay there instead. Yulara is a purpose-built tourist settlement only 8km from the entrance to the Uluru -Kata Tjuta National Park.
If you want to go to Uluru , walking is not an option as it is around 20km from Yulara. You can walk around by yourself, ie you don’t have to go on a tour , but walking around is of little use if you can ‘t get there. In other words the missing part of your equation is the transport from Yulara to Uluru itself.
Yes – Kings Canyon is worth the trip. It takes about two/three hours to drive there from Yulara and it is a bit of a detour but well worth it . The walk will take you about three hours, take something to eat and plenty of water. Make sure you walk down into the Garden of Eden.
