Although the movie has been criticized by gay groups for erasing the novel’s implications of a sexual relationship between Idgie and Ruth , there is little in the book to be erased: the novel shows Idgie as a forthright suitor for Ruth’s love , but only indirectly does it indicate that her love is not platonic.

Fried Green Tomatoes is a movie depicting the classic themes of female friendship, standing up for yourself, and inadvertent cannibalism . She develops a close friendship with Ruth, who had been Idgie’s brother’s girlfriend until he was hit by a train and killed.
Idgie and Ruth lived back in the 1920’s and 1930’s in Whistle Stop, Alabama. Ninny did as well, and regales the two women’s adventures to Evelyn, who takes these stories as inspiration for her own life. Fried Green Tomatoes is based off of the book ” Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe” by Fannie Flagg.
When Idgie goes to rescue Ruth from the villainous Frank, Ruth tells Idgie she’s pregnant. Ruth has the baby — whom they name Buddy — and then they open the café. Until, uh, Idgie is charged with Frank’s murder (she didn’t do it), and Ruth dies of cancer years later, it’s pretty idyllic.
Now, both the movie and Fannie Flagg’s book, upon which the film is based, are set in Alabama , not Georgia. And Alabama is where the original Whistle Stop Cafe, now the Irondale Cafe in the town of Irondale, is located now. But the movie was filmed in Juliette, near Macon in the heart of Georgia.
Also, another thing that wasn’t really covered in the movie was the age difference between Ruth and Idgie . Like Ruth looked around 14 or something when she first met Idgie and Idgie looked like, what, 7 or 8.
