A ” 5 star restaurant ” comes from the star rating system that’s used in determining the quality of a restaurant . 5 stars indicates it is an excellent restaurant , 4 stars a very good restaurant , 3 stars a good restaurant , 2 stars a fair restaurant , 1 star an ok restaurant worthy of mention.
It depends on the rating used, Michelin Stars (the leading rating in Europe and probably the most prestigious in the world – they rate restaurants around the world) only go up to three, and there are very few 3- star restaurants . 5 – stars is the maximum for hotels.
Following the announcement of the 2017 Michelin Guide, the restaurants Le Cinq, Le George and L’Orangerie at the Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris have been collectively crowned with a total of five Michelin stars , making it the first luxury Hotel in Europe with three Michelin – starred restaurants.

Restaurants can be awarded a ‘Fork and Spoon’ rating, according to the relative luxury of the surroundings, and unlike the stars , this rating system goes up to five. So while it isn’t possible for a restaurant to have four Michelin stars , it could have four forks and spoons.

In October 2013, the Gordon Ramsay at The London restaurant in New York lost its two Michelin stars due to issues encountered by the Michelin reviewers. The guide’s director Michael Ellis stated that he was served “some very erratic meals” and also experienced “issues with consistency.”

Average Rating Formula Each value is worth a different amount. For example, 4, 5 – star ratings is worth 20 points and 3, 3 star ratings is worth 9 points. Take all of these values, add them up to a total, then divide by the number of possible ratings ( 5 ). This results in the average rating .
In fact, the scores most sought after by consumers are between 4 and 4.5 stars . Combined with a decent sample size of customer reviews , businesses in that rating range can attract customers easier than any place with a 5- star rating . More customers also means more revenue.
